A 29-year old man, Chuks Emmanuel arrested for stealing a Plasma Television has confessed that he actually committed the offence because he could not watch while his sick mother die in his presence without him doing anything.
Emmanuel who hails from Isiala Mbano in Abia State was arrested and charged before Isolo Magistrate’s court on Wednesday with stealing.
When he was arraigned, he pleaded guilty.
Emmanuel told the court that he was a businessman and at a time, the business collapsed and since then, he has being struggling to survive.
He said it was during this that his mother fell sick and since he had no money to take her to the hospital, he thought the next thing to do was to steal to save her life.
Emmanuel said he had never stolen before and was unlucky after he stole the item.
He was apprehended by neighbours who handed him over to the police at Ago Palace in Okota, Lagos.
According to the police, Emmanuel went to 102, Ago Palace Way in Okota and stole the Plasma Television valued at N40,000.
The stolen item belong to one Anthony Egboma.
Emmanuel said he lives at Lawrence Omogbemi Street, Ejigbo with his parents.
He pleaded for leniency and said if he was freed, he would not go back to stealing.
The prosecutor, Mr A.U. Ojei asked the court since the suspect pleaded guilty, the court should give short adjournment for fact and sentence.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Shonubi adjourned the matter till 24 October 2016 for fact and sentence.
Emmanuel was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when he will be convicted.
