The nomination of Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins, a Nigerian player playing for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua in China, for Nigerian Awards for Sporting Excellence, did not come on a platter of gold but was merited.
This was confirmed to PM EXPRESS at the weekend by the Chairman of the Award Committee, Prince Isidore Oduah, a former board member of Nigeria Football Association, (NFA), now Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Prince Oduah said that Nigeria’s Super Eagles are missing a big role the forward supposed to be playing in the team judging from his exploits in the Chinese League this season.
“Both on and off the field of play, Obafemi Martins has been so excellent. We were so much impressed with the donation he made to the Lagos State Government recently. This showed that the player is given back to the society that made him, ” Prince Oduah, a former chairman of Anambra State Sports Council said.
Other nominees for the Nigerian Awards for Sporting Excellence include Super Eagles Skipper Mikel Obi; mesmerising winger Victor Moses; veteran striker Obafemi Martins;, Carl Ikeme, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and table tennis star, Aruna Quadri.
