Metuh Bags 7-Year Jail Term For Corruption

After a judgment lasting over six hours, Justice Okon Abang of  Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday sentenced  former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, to seven years imprisonment over seven counts allegations of corruption and money laundering levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The Judge convicted Metuh on all the seven-count.

The Judge found Metuh guilty of fraudulently receiving N400 million from the Office of the National Security Adviser in November 2014 for use of  the PDP and for his personal purposes.

Metuh was also declared guilty of transaction involving cash sum of $2 million without going through a financial institution.

According to the Judge, the transaction violated the anti-money laundering law which pegs the maximum cash transaction an individual undertake outside a financial institution at N5 million. 

Metuh was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for counts 1, 2, 4 and 7, five years imprisonment for count 3, and three years on counts 5 and 6.

The sentences will run concurrently, hence, the former PDP spokesperson will spend only seven years, the highest number of years of jail term, in prison.

In addition, the Court directed Metuh to pay a fine of N375 million to the Federal Government.

Destra Investments, his company will also  pay some money  to the Federal Government.

In addition, funds in the accounts of Destra will be forfeited to the Federal Government.
