Motorcycle Operator In Police Uniform Batters Police Inspector On Highway

A Police Inspector, Umaru Ahmed, attached to Onireke Division, had a nasty experience in Lagos State while attempting to implement traffic law on Badagry Expressway by accosting a motorcycle operator on Police uniform.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the motorcycle operator, Emmanuel Nnamdi Okechukwu, attacked him, inflicted injury on him and tore his uniform for attempting to arrest him on the highway and interrogating him over the Police uniform he wore while riding the motorcycle.
The incident happened at Moshalashi Bus Stop along Badagry/Mile 2 Expressway, Ojo area of Lagos.
The 34-year old Okechukwu has been arrested and charged for allegedly impersonating as a Police officer and assaulting Inspector Ahmed.
According to the Police, the motorcycle rider, Okechukwu, was accosted by the victim, Ahmed, for being with the Nigeria Police T-Shirt and using it to ride a motorcycle with the intent that he may be taken to be a member of the Police Force, an offence contrary and punishable under Section 77 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
While the officer, who was on lawful duty, attempted to apprehend him, he resisted Inspector Ahmed from discharging his lawful duty, assaulted and injured him in the process.
The Police posited that the alleged offence is punishable under Section 117 and 174 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
Part of the charges read: “That you Emmanuel Nnamdi Okechukwu ‘M’ on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did seriously assault one Inspector Umaru Ahmed ‘M’ of the Nigeria Police Onireke Division and tore his Police Uniform with intent to resist arrest and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 174 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015”.
“That you Emmanuel Nnamdi Okechukwu ‘M’ on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did unlawfully assault one Inspector Umaru Ahmed ‘M’ by dragging him on the ground with your motorcycle and as a result caused him bodily harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Esther Adesulu, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs A.M. Alade, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
