The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) commends Nigeria’s number one table tennis player, Aruna Quadri on his latest feat as the first African to be among the top 25 players in the world.

Shortly before departing for the Rio Olympics, Quadri inscribed his name in world table tennis history by becoming the first African player to be among top 30 players.

He further cemented his place by becoming the first African to reach the quarterfinals of table tennis event in the Olympic.

For this feat, Quadri has brought immense goodwill to Nigeria and become a role model to the African continent, where a lot of youths are looking for mentors and role models to guide them especially in sports.

The association commends Quadri for his drug-free career and called on him not to rest on his oars by bring more honours to the country.

“We are indeed proud of what Quadri has done for Nigeria. He is a shining star and one that should be emulated in the sporting world where some athletes have engaged in the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

“With his immense rise and God-given talent, he has brought hope and direction for many youths in Nigeria who are in the sport. It is a challenge to them and believe that they can rise even beyond Quadri’s feat. We urge government at all levels to create conducive environment for sports men and women desirous of Quadri’s feat, ” SWAN said in a statement made available to P.M.EXPRESS Wednesday.

The association also commends the League Management Company (LMC) for the various innovations it has brought to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and bringing about a healthy rivalry among the various clubs.

While SWAN commends the Shehu Dikko-led LMC for attracting sponsors to the NPFL, the committee should continue to make policies and programmes that will uplift the league and make it the best in Africa.
