The Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Burundi, Amb. Dr. Elijah Onyeagba, has described as legendary, the signing of the Inaugural Nigeria-Burundi Joint Commission today in Bujumbura, the Republic of Burundi.
At the event held in Bujumbura, Nigeria’s delegation was ably led by the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Amb. Zubairu Dada, alongside Representatives of the Ministry, Nigeria Export and Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigeria Investment and Promotion Council (NIPC) and other Nigerian parastatals and agencies.
According to the Head of Nigeria Mission in Burundi, ”The Inauguration of this first ever Nigeria-Burundi Joint Commission today, with its expected attendant effects on skills transfer for the tangible benefits to be derived from our bilateral cooperation and its positive impact on Africa’s key priorities, especially in the field of education, democratic institutions, promotion of good governance, improving regional and sub regional security, fight against corruption and terrorism, vocational training and agricultural advancement have all entered the greenlines in our cooperation to providing amazing trade and investment opportunities for our economies”.
“Nigeria and Burundi share some common values of democracy, respect for human rights and social justice. We shall also continue to build our good relationship based on those principles and will continue to ensure that our solidarity in this regard is protected.”
“It is on record that the African continent is central to Nigeria’s foreign policy directives. In the same vein, Nigeria has continued to play the *big brother role in addressing the challenges confronting our continent.”
“Previous trade statistics between Nigeria and Burundi, did not adequately reflect the potential of both great countries despite our economies showing economic resilience and good growth prospects. The potential for increased bilateral trade remains strong.”
“I am confident that this legendary signing of this Joint Commission, will open windows for improved trade and investment, mining, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, educational exchange and political consultation” the Nigerian envoy concluded.
Earlier in his Inaugural speech, the Minister of State Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Amb. Zubairu Dada, promised the Nigerian Government’s cooperation in making sure that the vision and mission of the Joint Commission are achieved.
In his welcome address, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Ambassador Albert Shingiro, who led the Burundian delegation expressed optimism and the Burundian Government’s willingness to ensure maximum utilization of all the economic benefits accruable from the Joint Commission and equally promised the government’s faithfulness in partnering with the Joint Commission to achieve its desired goals.
