Nigerian Embassy In Bujumbura Receives Nigerian Expatriates

On July 31st 2021, Nigeria initiated the Nigeria-Burundi Joint Commission Development Programme designed by the Head of the Nigeria Mission in Burundi, Ambassador Elijah Onyeagba PhD.  

One item in the Bilateral Agreements signed at the event was the Educational Cooperation between both African countries.  The implementation of this agreement expectedly has kicked off in full force six months after. 

 On 20th January, 2022, the Nigerian Embassy in Bujumbura received a team of Nigerian academics on the Educational exchange programme. The Embassy received the team led by Prof Stephen Inegbe and Dr. Bunmi Ogunyemi, both lecturers at the University of Uyo, who are on an exchange program with the University of Burundi. The team has on its board, lecturers who will teach English Language and Literature in the University of Burundi’s Faculty of English Language and Literary Studies.  

Commenting on the development, Amb Elijah Onyeagba PhD affirmed that in return, some Burudian lecturers are also expected to travel to Nigeria as part of the bilateral agreement.   

Going further Amb Onyeagba said,”We at the Nigerian Embassy in Bujumbura are excited as we have not only signed but have begun the implementation of the bilateral agreement. We will continue to explore other provisions within this bilateral agreement and work on other iniatives to deepen the relationship between Nigeria and Burundi”.  

Also during the week, the Nigeria Diplomatic Mission in Burundi received the Permanent Secretary of Burundi’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Mr Ferdinand Bashikako and the Tanzanian Ambassador to Burundi, Dr. Jilly Maleko who came to sign the Condolence Register in honour of the late Nigerian leader, Late Chief Ernest Shonekan who passed on recently.

The Permanent Secretary conveyed the Burudian Government’s deepest condolences to the President and the good people of Nigeria; describing late Chief Shonekan as a political icon while Dr. Maleko described Shonekan as a sage in Africa’s political history.
