President Muhammadu Buhari has said he will not intervene to secure the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from prison because that would be interfering with the judiciary.
Kanu, a separatist leader, is currently being prosecuted for treason offences.
Some leaders of the South-east had met with President Buhari and appealed to him to release Kanu as part of efforts to ensure peace in the region.
But when asked about update on Kanu during an exclusive interview with Channels TV, Buhari said the judiciary is one institution he would not interfere with.
He noted that when Kanu was in Europe and abusing the Nigerian government, he never knew the consequence.
He said the government is giving him the opportunity for him to defend himself now and not to abuse government outside the country.
“We will not release him. There is a possibility of political solution if they behave. You cannot go out and abuse us overseas, let him account for what he has done,” the President said.
