Hon Mrs. Blessyn Brume-Ataguba, Honourable Federal Commissioner representing Delta State in the National Population Commission together with other Federal Commissioners across Nigeria, has joined the National Population Commission (NPC) Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, FNSA, to host a pivotal meeting with a delegation from the Rabat Process Secretariat of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, led by Mr. Jean-Claude DeCoades in order to foster dialogue and strategic planning as Nigeria gears up for its leadership of the Rabat Process from 2025 to 2026.

The event, which took place at the NPC Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday December 4, 2024, had Federal Commissioners and Directors of the Commission in attendance.

This significant visit which marks a vital step in strategic planning and dialogue for the program is focused on enhancing collaboration between the NPC and the delegation to improve migration policy management, develop effective solutions for migration challenges, and uphold the rights and dignity of migrants within Nigeria and beyond.

The Rabat Process serves as a regional dialogue platform uniting governments, international organizations, and civil society to tackle the complex challenges and opportunities associated with migration in West Africa.

In his address, Mr. DeCoades emphasized ICMPD’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s presidency of the Rabat Process and partnering with the NPC to enhance data collection, analysis, dissemination, and management regarding migration trends in the country.

On his part, NPC Chairman, Hon. Kwarra reiterated the NPC’s constitutional mandate as Nigeria’s primary agency for migration data. He highlighted the Commission’s leadership in the Migration Data Management Working Group (MDMWG), which coordinates migration data activities across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This initiative aims to boost the efficiency of migration data generation and strengthen inter-agency collaboration.

“As Nigeria prepares to take on a leadership role in the Rabat Process, our commitment to improving migration data management practices remains a top priority,” Hon. Kwarra stated. “This reflects our dedication to informed policymaking and sustainable migration governance.”

The NPC’s efforts underscore the importance of data-driven strategies in addressing migration issues, positioning Nigeria as a proactive leader in regional migration management.

In her remarks after the meeting, Hon Mrs Blessyn Brume-Ataguba assured Deltans of effective representation in the affairs of the Commission, emphasizing that Delta state will always get their due of what they are entitled to in the management of the nation’s population data and other concerns of the Commission.
