NUJ Imo Council Disowns Association Of Imo State-Based Journalists, Warns Public

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Imo State Council, has distanced itself from the activities of a group parading as the “Association of Imo State-Based Journalists, AIBJ,” saying the group is not recognised by the Union.

 

In a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, JP, the NUJ described AIBJ as an unknown body with no affiliation to the NUJ structure in the state or at the national level.

“The attention of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Imo State Council, has been drawn to the activities of a group of persons parading themselves as members or representatives of an organisation known as the Association of Imo State-Based Journalists, AIBJ,” the statement said.

“The NUJ Imo State Council hereby wishes to inform the general public that the said group is not recognised, registered or affiliated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.”

For clarity, the Council listed the recognised professional bodies and chapels within the NUJ structure to include the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, the Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE, and the Correspondents’ Chapel, among others duly recognised in accordance with the Union’s constitution.

The Council stated that it will not be held responsible for any transaction, representation, financial dealings, loss or other consequences arising from dealings with AIBJ or persons claiming to represent it.

“The NUJ Imo State Council therefore urges members of the public to exercise caution and to disregard any claim by the said group or its representatives suggesting that it is recognised or affiliated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo State Council,” it warned.

The NUJ also directed all registered and practising members in Imo State to disassociate themselves from the activities of the group.

 

“Any member found to be acting in violation of this directive may face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the Constitution and regulations of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,” the statement added.

 

The Council said the press release serves as a formal disclaimer to the general public and a caveat to all members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo State Council.
