A 57-year old nurse, Mrs. Ahemen Jam, has been arrested in Benue State and charged before the Court for allegedly battering her house help, Kpamor Jir and inflicting injuries on her body including her buttocks.
P.M.EXPRESS reports the nurse, Mrs. Jam, has been charged before the Makurdi Magistrates Court for allegedly inflicting such injuries on the victim.
The Police charged Mrs. Jam, who lives behind ‘E’ Police Station in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue, for conspiracy, force, assault and causing grievous hurt to the house help, Miss Jir.
The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Jonah Uletu, told the Court that on 24th March, 2023, a distress call was received at ‘E’ Division Police Station, Makurdi. The caller was said to have informed the Police that the defendant conspired with her son, Orngu Jam and beat their house help mercilessly giving her deep wounds on her buttocks.
The prosecutor said the Police swung into action and took the victim to Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where she has been receiving treatment.
Uletu informed the Court that the defendant was arrested for committing the crime during Police investigation while her son is still at large.
Uletu said further investigations revealed that the injuries were inflicted on the child between March 17 and March 24 by daily beating with an electric cable.
He further said that the nurse, who brought the house help from Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue, did not take her to any hospital for treatment but was still compelling her to be fetching water for her and her son until a concerned neighbour discovered the wounds and reported to the Police.
The prosecutor said that her offences contravened Sections 97, 266 and 248 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Roseline Iyorshe, who did not take her plea for want of jurisdiction, then ordered her remand in custody and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice.
The matter was adjourned till 15th May, 2023, for further mention pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
