The President of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Prof Ibikunle Baruwa, has dissolved the NURTW Lagos State Council.
The NURTW President took the decision today Tuesday 4th September, 2019, at the National Secretariat in Abuja, following the reported clashes and rifts among the leaders and members over leadership control in Lagos State.
The President said that the dissolution of the Lagos State Council is to bring sanity to the members of the union in the state. He appealed to them to go back to the state and resolve issues and differences they have with the association and maintain peace among themselves.
According to him, “I am not going to condone any indiscipline among our members in Lagos State. You have established the cause of the problem at the Naval Centre, zoning or no zoning, which is not important, what is paramount is to maintain peace in Lagos State”.
He pointed out the fact that the Presidency, which was zoned to the South West, should be appreciated and they should not use their selfish ambitions in Lagos State to disrupt the peace of the reign of the new dispensation.
The NURTW President, Prof Baruwa and other leaders, who admonished the Lagos State leaders, said leadership comes from God; no one should waste anybody’s life because he wants to lead.
One of the leaders commended the wisdom of the President. He said it shows he is ready to stand by the law and authority to move the organisation forward. He also asked the leaders to be their brother’s keeper and stop nefarious activities.
The President appealed to whoever has taken his case to Court to go back home and withdraw the case in order for it to be settled in-house. He said the issue of the union should not have been taken to Court because it is an internal problem, which has to be solved with internal mechanism. He advised members with grievances to write petitions about any grievance and if not addressed at the state, they should be forwarded to the headquarters, where they will be looked into and decisive steps taken on them.
The President further said he is personally not happy with the crises and killings in Lagos State and warned the leaders to stop the rifts, go back, reconcile all their members across the State and pocket their guns and cutlasses while any complain should be put into writing. He advised them to accept whoever is going to be the Lagos State Chairman, saying God will give him the wisdom to lead aright and the Chairman to be should go and sit with the elders for advice.
