Chairman Badminton Section, Ikoyi Club 1938, Mazi Nwankwo has expressed satisfaction at the just concluded Indo-Nigeria Chinese Intra Club Tourney held in Lagos.

The three days event which kicked off last Friday ended on Sunday as Nwankwo congratulated the organizers for the successful tournament.

Speaking with journalists, Nwankwo who was among the invited guests to grace the closing ceremony said he was happy that the game of badminton is gaining ground in Nigeria and commended the Police College Badminton club headed by Mazi Kelechi for this initiative,

“What I saw today {Sunday} showed that the future of badminton is bright in Nigeria. I must confess that I am impressed with the standard of play by Badminton players and the organization of the competition. I congratulate Mr Kelechi for the job well done,” he said.

Nwankwo however tasked the government, private sector and individuals to give attention to badminton and other sports instead of football only. He said Nigeria is doing well in badminton and insisted that if there is enough support from different quarters, the country would rank among the top five badminton playing nations in the world.

“It is high time for government, private sector or sports philanthropists to look into badminton as one of the sports that bring laurel to this country. If we have Badminton college just like Football College in Kwara and teach our children the rudiment of the game at the tender age, more Nigerian youths would show more interest in the game of badminton,” he said.

In her own remark, Head, Corporate Communication Mutual Benefits Assurance, Ellen Offo also commended the Badminton players for their performance. She said the club had done well in order to use the competition to feast with other races in the club and urged the leadership of the club to continue to have programmes that would benefit all the club members.

Meanwhile, some male and female Badminton players who distinguished themselves in the last three days of the competition received gift items for their outstanding performances.

Friends, well-wishers, and other invited guests who attended the closing ceremony were entertained with drinks, food as a way of appreciating them for their supports and prayers offered by the club in the outgoing year.
