NYG 2024: Team Lagos Qualify For 10 Ball Games After Keenly Contested Zonal Elimination In Osogbo

The Southwest Zonal Elimination for the 2024 National Youth Games ended in Osogbo, Osun State on Saturday with Team Lagos proving once again their dominance as they picked 10 tickets to feature in the team sports of the youth tournament scheduled for Asaba in Delta State.

In the final result sheet signed by Fabunmi Evelyn Ifediba, the Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development late on Saturday, Team Lagos came first in basketball female event, football (female), rugby (male), handball (male), and hockey (female), while the state picked second position in basketball (male), rugby (female), cricket (male) and volleyball (female).

In other results, Team Oyo and Ekiti picked slots in seven sports respectively, while Team Ogun were able to secure slots in five sports, Osun (4) and Ondo (2).

The Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Hon. Lekan Fatodu who led the Lagos State delegation to the zonal elimination could not hide his appreciation for the sportsmanship displayed by the youngsters from Lagos State at the tournament, and indeed the entire team which included the coaches, officials and other support staff.

The DG said in a brief message before the team departed for Lagos early on Sunday.

“I want to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation and heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in our remarkable success at the National Youth Games 2024 Zonal Elimination.

“To the directors, heads of units, committee heads, coaches, technical staff, camp commandants, secretaries, assistant secretaries, and all other administrative and support teams, I extend my sincere gratitude for your dedication and tireless efforts that have been instrumental in our success.

“Your seamless coordination and attention to detail made all the difference in our overall performance.

“I also want to acknowledge the support of Mr. Governor in all of this. His commitment to empowering the youth in Lagos State through sports has laid the foundation for our achievements. Mr Governor’s interest and investment in the welfare of our team ensured that our athletes felt motivated and cared for throughout the tournament.

“The journey does not end here – this is just the beginning. I am confident that we will build on this success, aiming even higher as we prepare for the National Youth Games 2024, which will be held in Delta State this month.

“Again, thank everyone for your hard work, dedication, and support. Together, we have shown that Lagos is not just a competitor, but a leader in sports in Nigeria,” he said.
