The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue State has launched a two-day free medical outreach in Zongu Community, Mbakyo Ward, Tarka Local Government Area, under its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the outreach, which began on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, aims to improve access to basic healthcare services in underserved communities while promoting public health awareness.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Garba Veronica, said the initiative is part of the corps’ Community Development Service (CDS) aimed at giving back to the society. She described the outreach as a practical step toward improving rural health and strengthening the bond between corps members and their host communities.

Also speaking, the Assistant Director of CDS, Ms Gokum Stella Beulah, said the two-day outreach is designed to meet the urgent health needs of the rural population. She encouraged residents to take full advantage of the opportunity and invite others to benefit.

The Executive Chairman of Tarka LGA, represented by Hon. Afere A. Asanyi, commended NYSC for choosing Zongu as a beneficiary. He assured the corps members of the council’s continued support and commitment to their safety.

The outreach featured health education sessions, including a talk on hypertension by the Chief Medical Director of the programme, Dr Ehujuo Ogechikaraodi, who advised residents on healthy living habits such as good nutrition, regular exercise, and routine checkups.

Free medical consultations, distribution of essential drugs, blood pressure and sugar level tests were offered during the outreach.

A beneficiary, Mr Elijah A., a senior staff of Tarka LGA, described the programme as timely and impactful, noting its role in preparing corps members for future leadership.

Dignitaries at the event included representatives of the traditional head of Zongu, Zaki Ortar Atorough Ikya, NYSC officials, community leaders, corps members, and healthcare volunteers.
