The maiden Traditional Sports Interclub Open Championship, otherwise known as ASA Sports Week, ended at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park in Yaba, Lagos, southwest Nigeria with two clubs, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa Ayo Club and Abiola Lawal Clubs won the first position in more than one event in the eighteen-event competition.
Obasa Club won the first position in Ayo male and female singles, as well as mixed doubles, while Abiola Lawal Club was outstanding in Langa’s Ruwa, Kaoshi and Tureshi events.
Other clubs could only pick the first position in one event to trail behind Obasa and Abiola Lawal Clubs. The closing ceremony was attended by the Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku and the Director-General, Oluwatoyin Gafaar.
While addressing the participating clubs during the closing ceremony, Aiyepeku, who hailed the display of sportsmanship of the athletes, assured that the success of the competition would further encourage the Sports Commission to support the staging of the sports week annually.
He also commended the Board of Lagos State Traditional Sports Association headed by Mrs Abiola Lawal for putting together a wonderful ASA Sports Week, adding that other sports associations in the state should take a cue from this laudable programme.
The Director-General, Gafaar said that the ASA Sports Week was organised to promote the traditions of the people and to give the traditionalists a sense of belonging in the sports administration in Lagos State.
Apart from Ayo and Langa, traditional games competed for in the tournament included Abula, Dambe and Kokowa.
