The Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has assured that his administration would complete the 4.311km St Peter’s University Achina-Onneh Road.

Recent social media attention on the road had sparked up controversy from affected communities, creating doubts about the commitment of the administration to the completion of the road.

But speaking at “Meet the Media,” an exclusive interactive session with the governor’s media team that offers a rare insight into the achievements of the Governor Willie Obiano administration, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Marcel Ifejiofor assured that the road would soon be completed.

Engr Ifejiofor also addressed concerns over other on-going road projects in the state and emphasized that the contractor handling the Onne-Achina-Ogboji road has been mobilized and will return to site soon to complete the project.

“The Onne-Achina-Ogboji road has been fully awarded. The contractor was equally mobilized to site”, said Ifejiofor. “I want to assure the communities affected by this road that the contractor will return to site and the road will be completed before long” he further stated.

Continuing, the Commissioner expressed Government’s desire to improve the road network in Anambra state. He posited that the Obiano administration has taken roads to communities which never had tarred roads since existence. Conceding that there are areas in need of urgent attention, like roads in Obodoukwu, Okpoko, internal roads in Onitsha, Awka and other areas, the Commissioner noted that most of the roads have been designed and awarded.

“We will clear necessary water channels and drains and commence construction soonest. I will visit Obodoukwu anytime soon to reassure the residents that work will commence on the road”, he said.

Addressing the issue of road construction in hard-to-reach areas, Commissioner Ifejiofor said that the administration had constructed roads in communities described previously as no-go areas because of their terrain.

“Nzam used to be the only LGA headquarter in Nigeria without a tarred road, but this administration is constructing a 14km long road to the community. It has completed a bridge and is currently sand-filling a stretch of about 2.4km into the community.

“The 42 kilometer Aguleri-Uno/Aguleri-Otu road, traversing Eziagulu Otu, Enugwu-Otu and Nkpunando are also instances where communities are getting tarred roads for the first time. The economic value of the Aguleri Uno/Aguleri Otu road is that it leads to the state’s oil field. This administration had also constructed a 280 metre bridge over the Omambala River to provide access to the state’s oil fields. 21 kilometers of road out of 42 kilometers designed for the area has been completed”, Ifejiofor further explained.

The commissioner further emphasized that governor Obiano is passionate about delivering good roads to Ndi Anambra, pointing out that his administration has done a lot in road construction and intervened in many erosion sites, reclaiming lands for the people.

According to him, the government has worked on about 202 roads so far, spread across the three senatorial zones of the state. Many have been completed while others are still ongoing.

The government has equally completed six bridges inherited from the previous administration and awarded contracts for the construction of 20 new bridges out of which eight has been completed and 12 are currently ongoing.
