Ofo Na Ogu: The Igbo Concept Of Clear Conscience And Integrity

The phrase “Ofo na Ogu” holds a central place in Igbo culture as an expression of clear conscience, truth, and moral uprightness. It is used in situations of accusation, suspicion, or dispute to assert innocence and to invoke spiritual witness.

In Igbo thought, the statement is a declaration of self-righteousness and a call for divine support. It also represents a dissociation from actions considered unethical or harmful. The words can be used interchangeably as “Ofo na Ogu” or “Ogu na Ofo” without changing the meaning.

The expression “Iji ogu jide ofo” means to live with integrity and remain blameless. This is reflected in common Igbo sayings such as “Ofo ka ideyi je awa ani” meaning moral authority prevails, and “O me ife jide ofo” meaning one should act with a clear conscience.

Ofo as Symbol of Authority

In tangible form, ofo is a short staff cut from the branch of the ofo tree or ogilisi tree. It represents spiritual authority and ancestral connection. In traditional Igbo society, the ofo is kept by the head of the family, clan, or kindred.

The ofo is used in family shrines and during prayers, festivals, or times of need. It symbolizes trust and responsibility. The custodian, usually the eldest male, holds property and leadership in trust for the family. This includes land, trees, and the ancestral home.

In its intangible form, ofo represents authority, justice, and moral power bestowed on a leader to act on behalf of the people.

Ndigbo also incorporate “ofo” and “ogu” into personal names to reflect values and aspirations. Examples include:

– Oguejiofo- Struggle backed by truth

– Ejimofo – I stand on my innocence

– Jideofo- Hold on to truth

– Ofoche – May the ofo protect me

– Oforah – The people’s authority

Ofo na Ogu in Music and Rituals

Many Igbo musicians have referenced the concept in songs to affirm truth and seek protection. Artists such as E.C. Arinze, Mike Ejeagha, and Niko Mbanga used “ofo na ogu” in their lyrics to convey sincerity and moral strength.

The concept also features in traditional ceremonies:

1.  Igo Ofo – Prayers and blessings offered to ancestors for favor and guidance

2.  Ini Ofo – A solemn declaration used in serious matters to call for justice

3.  Mkpuwapu – A way of distancing oneself from evil or false accusations

4.  Title Ceremonies – During Ozo title taking, “ofo-o” responses accompany songs and prayers as a sign of affirmation

5.  War Songs and Funeral Rites – Chants of “ofo-o” are used to assert unity and authority

Iji Ogu – Seeking Divine Guidance

In some contexts, “ogu” refers to casting lots to seek spiritual direction. Three identical items representing options are presented, and the choice made is believed to be guided by a higher power. The outcome is accepted as final and binding.

Conclusion

Historically, the Igbo did not rely on external devices to test truth. An oath taken on the ofo was considered binding because the speaker was believed to have a consecrated tongue that could not lie.
