As if it has been planned, supporters, officials and boxers of Team Ogun could not stomach the defeat of their boxer in the hands of Team Lagos pugilist as they went wild throwing caution to the dustbin to disrupt the boxing event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Edo State.
The fight between Lagos boxer, Shittu Afolabi and Kasali Abayomi in the 52kg category ended in 3-2 referee decision due to what could be described as Abayomi’s technical prowess during the fight that lasted three rounds.
This, however, could not go down well with Team Ogun which mobilised officials, supporters and their boxers to descend on the referees and other boxing officials, throwing chairs, tables and other dangerous weapons even in the presence of the state Commissioner for Sports seated as one of the special guests.
As at the time of this report, normalcy has been restored at the venue, Oba Okenzua Cultural Centre in Benin, while Team Lagos won gold medal in that weight category.
P.M. EXPRESS reports that as the violence was going on Team Lagos camp remained calm.
