Ambassador Emeni Ibe, JP, AP, President General of notable Niger Delta socio-cultural group, the Orashi National Congress (ONC), has called on Orashi youths at home and in the diaspora to reject drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, according to a statement released to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 June.
In the statement, Amb. Ibe warned that hard drugs destroy lives, damage mental and physical health, fuel crime, ruin destinies and can lead to untimely death.
“As your President General, I urge you to shun hard drugs and embrace discipline, hard work and integrity. No temporary pleasure is worth sacrificing your future. Let us build a drug-free and prosperous Orashi region together,” Amb. Ibe said.
He also called on parents, community leaders and relevant agencies to intensify efforts in protecting young people from the dangers of substance abuse.
The United Nations observes 26 June each year as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day is used globally to raise awareness about the major health and social problems posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
The Orashi National Congress (ONC) is a socio-cultural organization representing communities in the Orashi region of the Niger Delta.
Drug abuse and addiction can cause serious health, legal, and social consequences. Individuals struggling with substance use are advised to seek help from medical professionals, counselors, or accredited rehabilitation centers. In Nigeria, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) provides public education and support services related to drug abuse.
