Abia State does not need to invent a new agricultural vision. More than six decades ago, the late Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara demonstrated how agriculture could drive economic growth, create jobs and transform the fortunes of the old Eastern Region. As Premier, Okpara made agricultural investment, particularly in oil palm, a cornerstone of regional development. Today, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, is seeking to revive that legacy by repositioning agriculture as a major driver of economic growth and prosperity in Abia State.

In his speech titled: *The Immortality of Good Works,* delivered on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the 3rd Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara Lecture and Founder’s Day celebration of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Governor Otti made it clear that Okpara’s achievements should inspire practical action rather than mere historical celebration. He acknowledged that many agricultural assets established during the former Premier’s administration had declined because of years of neglect. The challenge before Abia is to restore their productive capacity and adapt Okpara’s development vision to present day realities.

Significantly, Governor Otti disclosed that his administration had reached understandings with groups of investors who had committed to investing hundreds of millions of US dollars in the state’s agricultural value chain over the preceding two years, with particular emphasis on oil palm. This approach seeks to move agriculture beyond subsistence farming towards commercial production, processing and industrial development. If successfully implemented, the investments could generate employment, strengthen rural economies, expand business opportunities and increase government revenue.

Oil palm provides a direct link between Okpara’s agricultural legacy and Otti’s present agenda. However, reviving that legacy requires more than restoring plantations. Modern technology, improved seedlings, access to finance, research, processing facilities and reliable markets are essential to building a competitive agricultural sector. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, can also contribute through research, innovation and partnerships with government, investors and farming communities.

Ultimately, the argument for continuity is that successful development ideas should not be discarded with changes in political leadership. Okpara laid an important foundation by demonstrating agriculture’s potential to drive prosperity. Governor Otti now has the opportunity to modernise that vision through private investment, technology and commercial farming. The real measure of success will be productive farms, thriving agro industries, new jobs and improved livelihoods for Abia people. By translating historical lessons into tangible results, the New Abia can reclaim an important part of its agricultural heritage while building a stronger economic future.
