The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District and frontline Governorship Aspirant for the 2021 Anambra Governorship election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), has once again assured that, if elected the next Governor of the State, her administration shall witness massive development and empowerment of women.

Ekwunife made this assurance on Saturday, January 23, 2021 during a meeting with some of her supporters in Awka.

Speaking at the gathering, Ekwunife noted that even though she is in the Governorship race because she has the capacity and competence to serve Ndi Anambra, she believes that her entrance into the race gives women a great opportunity to be heard, and show their leadership capabilities.

Reeling out her plans for the women, Ekwunife stated that she considers women empowerment an important enabler to societal growth and development and would therefore initiate activities focused on empowering women and youths of the State.

“As Governor, our administration shall witness an era of working housewives, a situation where women are engaged in gainful economic activities that will assist them in supporting their husbands and families without neglecting their roles and obligations at home”.

She advised women to rise to the challenge and compete for opportunities where ever they find themselves, promising that her government will ensure that more opportunities are available for the women of Anambra State.

According to the quintessential Senator, “the world is gradually moving away from the situation where only Woman Leader positons and the Ministry of Women Affairs are reserved for women. Today, we have women who are better positioned to occupy influential positions in the Executive, Legislative and Judicial arms of government as well as the political party structures, and our duty is to make it possible for them by eliminating the gender influenced bottlenecks that limit their growth”.

Recall that Senator Ekwunife last year sponsored a bill for an Act to Alter the Provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to make provisions for gender inclusiveness in the composition of government and for other related matters.

The bill seeks to amend section 14 of the Nigerian constitution to allow that, for the composition of Government of the Federation, State, Local Government Council, Ministry or Agency, there must be not less than 40% representation of each of the gender groups (male or female) in the composition of such government. This is intended to guarantee at least not less than 40% position for women in all government establishments.
