Para Games: Team Lagos Finish 4th Overall, Travih Hails Athletes’ Resilience

Team Lagos’ first timer at the National Para Games saw the state making it in the Top 10 of the championship to finish in the fourth position on the overall medal table.

 

P.M. EXPRESS reports that the Games ended on a high on Thursday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja where a spectacular closing ceremony was held for the athletes who are mainly People With Disabilities (PWD) who came from no fewer than 20 states of the country.

 

At the end of the proceedings, Team Lagos clinched a total of 51 medals comprise 12 gold, 11 silver and 28 bronze medals,

 

In the first position are Team Bayelsa with 30 gold, 24 silver and 20 bronze medals, Team Abia came second with 16 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze medals, while Kano State are in the third position with 15 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze medals.

Team Lagos’ leader of delegation, Olumide Nunayon Travih,  express his heartfelt appreciation and applauded the tireless effort exhibited by his athletes and officials during the weeklong competition.

 

He said: “As we wrap up the exhilarating experience, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to each one of you as your dedication, hard work, and team spirit turned our plans into a resounding success which is a testimony of the collective effort and camaraderie displayed by all.

 

“It was inspiring to see how everyone seamlessly worked together, supporting each other and sharing in the joy of our achievements. Your enthusiasm and commitment did not go unnoticed, and I am incredibly proud to lead such a goal driven group of individuals.

 

“Together, we have not only met our goals but exceeded expectations thus creating memories that we will cherish for years to come.”

Travih, who is also the Director Sports Development (DSD), Lagos State Sports Commission, admonished his athletes and officials that it is not yet uhuru as the outing has not really position the status of Lagos State as the pacesetter in Nigeria sports, adding that all hands must be on deck to prepare very well for the next edition.

He said: “You will all agree that our performance did not relate with the Lagos Culture as we are known to be the pacesetter while other states follow suit. Hence as we go back home, it is pertinent to commence preparations towards our participation at the next edition of the Para Games and ensure we have a better outing.

 

“In conclusion, I want to Thank you all for your outstanding contributions and I pray that we continue to aim high and achieve greatness as a united team.”

 

Team Lagos contingent to the competition in Abuja comprised 148 male and 52 female athletes.
