A 76-year old cleric, Pastor Joshua Nwabuogu, has landed in trouble in Lagos State for allegedly engaging in fraudulent activity by using his unfunded bank cheque to obtain goods from members of the public.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Adetoun Street, Oko-Oba area of Lagos, where he resides and committed the alleged offence.

The cleric was alleged to have repeatedly ordered for undisclosed items from one Andrew Arikhan under the false pretence of paying him with his post dated bank  cheque, which the complainant accepted with the confidence that the cheque was genuine.

However, when he took the cheque to the bank in order to withdraw the money, the bank did not honour the cheque because there was no single money in the account.

The alleged fraud was then reported to the Police at Oko Oba Division and Pastor Nwabuogu was arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over the alleged act.

During interrogation, it was discovered that the victim was not the only person he had done such to in the past.
He admitted that he knew that there was no single money in the account before he gave the the two cheques that he was only hoping to get money to pay for the items before the cheques bounced.

The Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Ogba Magistrates Court for the alleged fraud.

When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, asked the Court to give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence which brought him before Court.
The Presiding Magistrate,  Mrs. E.  Kubeinje, granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.
However, he was remanded in Correctional Centre pending when he will perfect his bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 5th May, 2022, for mention.
