A bill seeking to repeal the Patents and Design Act CAP P2 LFN 2004 and enact the patents Act 2018, today scaled the second reading on the floor of the Senate.
The bill which was sponsored by Senator Andy Uba was meant to provide for the protection of inventions and innovations in research within Nigeria.
Owing to lack of protection for a number of inventions carried out by brilliant Nigerians, the bill seeks to repeal the Patents and Design Act CAP P2 LFN 2004 and replace it with the new bill.
Should the bill get passed, then Nigerian inventors and also innovations in fields such as business, technology, medicine and even manufacturing will benefit immensely from the passage of the bill.
Speaking with journalists after the senate session, Senator Uba decried the poor protection accorded a number of Nigerian inventors, he said that such did not create the enabling and conducive environment for these inventors. And that the bill when passed into law will take care of the rights of the inventors.
