Police Arraign Man, 67, In Lagos Over Alleged Assault On Woman

A 67-year-old man, Akinyemi Adeyinka Fatai, was arraigned before Ikeja Magistrate Court for alleged assault and threat to life against Kudirat Akinyemi.
According to the charge filed by the Commissioner of Police, the incident occurred on April 24, 2026, at about 10:30pm at No. 10, Onibiyo Street, Ahmadiya, in the Ikeja Magisterial District.
In Count I, the defendant was accused of assaulting Kudirat Akinyemi by beating her and pulling off her hair. The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Count II alleged that on the same date and place, the defendant gave Kudirat Akinyemi a fist blow to the mouth which caused her injury. This is contrary to Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
In Count III, the prosecution alleged that Akinyemi Adeyinka threatened to kill Kudirat Akinyemi during the incident. The offence is said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The charges were presented by Inspector Foluke Ologun of Area ‘G’ Headquarters, Ogba.
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ihkayere, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove the allegations.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of the livelihood and tax payment.
The defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
Sections 172 and 173 of the Lagos State Criminal Law cover assault and assault occasioning harm, while Section 56 addresses threats to life. Convictions attract fines and or jail terms.
Authorities in Lagos have continued to emphasize zero tolerance for domestic violence and have urged residents to report such cases to the Police for investigation.
Proceedings are ongoing and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
