A 54-year-old woman, Mary Allen, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba on Monday, over allegations of obtaining money under false pretence in Ikeja Lagos.
According to the charge sheet, Mary Allen was accused of fraudulently obtaining the sum of N15,000,000 from one Abba Sabitu on 15th May, 2026. The alleged incident occurred at about 9:00am at No. 115, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.
Police prosecutor, SP Josephine Ihkayere, told the court that the defendant allegedly collected the money under the pretence of selling a Toyota Highlander 2013 model. The prosecution said the claim was knowingly false.
The alleged offence is said to be contrary to Section 313 and punishable under Section 314(3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. The charge sheet was signed by Police authorities from Ikeja Division.
The charge sheet stated that the alleged fraud involved the sale of a Toyota Highlander SUV, 2013 model. The complainant, Abba Sabitu, reportedly paid N15,000,000 to the defendant based on the alleged representation.
Police alleged that the defendant did not have the vehicle to deliver as promised. The prosecution described the act as obtaining money under false pretence, which is an offence under Lagos State criminal law.
The charge sheet was endorsed by CSP Akinwunmi Oke. The Investigating Police Officer listed on the document is ASP Emem Emodi, attached to Ikeja Division.
When the charge was read to her in court, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ihkayere, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to provide evidence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted her bail in the sum of N800,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The case was adjourned for 30th June, 2026, for hearing while the defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.
Legal experts say the allegations remain accusations until proven in court. The defendant maintains her innocence and is presumed innocent until the court delivers its verdict.
