The Oyo State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the death of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, who was allegedly attacked during a masquerade procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan on Sunday.
The incident was reported to the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters by a family member identified as Mrs. Aderemi. According to her statement, she received a distress call from her elder sister around 4 p.m. about an attack involving a masquerade and his entourage.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Oluseyi Olayinka, confirmed in a statement issued on Monday that the victim was allegedly assaulted with axes and cutlasses by the masquerade known as Asoleke and several of his followers during the festival parade.
Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer at Mapo Division mobilized a team of operatives to the scene. Emergency responders immediately transported the injured man to a nearby hospital.
Medical personnel confirmed Sefiu Kehinde dead on arrival. The attending doctor documented the cause of death as injuries sustained from sharp objects.
Investigators processed the crime scene and obtained photographic evidence to aid the ongoing case. Police said exhibits were also recovered for forensic examination.
In line with Islamic customs, the deceased’s family requested and were granted permission to take custody of the body for burial. The Command noted it would continue to monitor developments related to the burial arrangements.
Authorities confirmed that the lead suspect, masquerade Asoleke, is currently in Police custody. Four other individuals allegedly involved in the attack are still being sought.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, has ordered that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for a more detailed probe.
Speaking on the development, a cultural analyst and lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Tunde Adediran, said traditional festivals must not be used as cover for violence. “Masquerade processions are meant to preserve culture and community values. When the sacred becomes a tool for assault, it undermines both tradition and public safety,” he stated.
The Police Command assured residents of Ibadan that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects. Members of the public have been urged to provide credible information to assist investigators.
The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order during cultural events. “We respect our traditions, but no tradition is above the law. Perpetrators of violence will be prosecuted,” DSP Olayinka said.
