The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the loss of one personnel during a gun battle with an unidentified criminal gang in the state.
According to DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra Command, the incident happened on Sunday morning along Ukegbu junction, Ezeiweka Road, Obosi.
He said the gang opened fire at the patrol vehicle without provocation, killing one personnel in the process and injuring others. He said the assailants also set a patrol truck ablaze.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the attackers drove in Sienna vehicle ash in color and started shooting at the patrol vehicle along Ukegbu junction, Ezeiweka Road.”
“Unfortunately, during the exchange of gunfire, one Police inspector paid the supreme price and some sustained gunshot injuries.”
“In a bid to escape the Police response team, they set the patrol vehicle ablaze,” he stated.
DSP Ikenga said the Police Command has intensified patrol and surveillance in the state especially within the Onitsha axis aimed at identifying and arresting the perpetrators of the attacks.
“The Command is not deterred with the recent incident but are more committed in delivering in its mandate of protecting lives and property,” he said.
