The residents of Alaba Street, Ejigbo area of Lagos, were still in shock over what would have led a 21-year old undergraduate of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to attempt committing suicide at home.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Police operatives from Ejigbo Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, foiled and  rescued one Augustine Chukwuemeka Obasi from taking his life over a disagreement with his parents over an undisclosed matter.

This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed that Obasi was rescued alive and rushed to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.

He said that on 7th January, 2020, at about 0829hrs, an officer of Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps, alerted Ejigbo Police Station that a young man, Obasi Augustine Chuckuemeka, 21, of No. 4, Alaba Street, Ejigbo Last bus stop, a student of UNN, Enugu Campus, tied a rope in a loop around their living room ceiling fan preparatory to committing suicide.
Elkana explained that Obasi was scolded by his parents and he decided to terminate his life by bringing a rope to tie himself for suicide.
However, the prompt response by operatives from Ejigbo Police Station prevented the undergraduate from killing himself. He was rescued and taken to the hospital for medical examination. Investigation is ongoing.
It appears young people nowadays prefer to commit suicide over emotional trauma, which they were not able to manage.
Some of the victims took popular home insecticides in the past and succeeded in taking their lives.
However, Obasi did not resort to the deadly insecticides to kill himself and that might have saved his life.

P.M.EXPRESS gathered that Obasi might be prosecuted for committing such offence which attracts several years of imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty before the Court for the alleged offence.
When our correspondent visited the residence, their neighbours expressed shock and described Obasi as a quiet person who they thought he would not attempt to commit suicide.
