While he was said to have been performing the duty, Okada riders gathered, held and battered him while other Police officers among the team abandoned him to his fate.
He was later rescued and taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment over the injuries he sustained on his body during the ugly attack.
One of the suspects, Chika Kama, has been arrested and charged for allegedly conspiring with others at large to assault Supol Richard and injuring him in the process.
The Police alleged that on 4th February, 2024, the 23-year old Kama conspired with others now at large and attacked the victim and other Police officers who were performing their duty and injured Supol Richard.
The other Police officers, who went with him, managed to escape and went back to the Area P Command, Ipaja and reported what happened and the Police mobilized and arrested Kama and detained at the Command for interrogation over their alleged conduct.
At the Command, the suspect claimed that he was not part of those Okada riders who attacked him and thought the Police officers were there to extort money from motorists by conducting illegal work on the road before they accosted them.
Not minding his claim, the Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged conspiracy and assault under the Criminal Laws of the State, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
However, he pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu-uthman, granted him bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The matter was adjourned till 5th March, 2024, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
