The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) and wife of the Inspector-General of Police, Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, has called for stronger global alliances to advance women’s leadership, influence, and participation in shaping inclusive and sustainable societies.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that Mrs. Disu made this call while delivering the Opening Remarks at the Handshake Summit and Awards held on the sidelines of the Commission on the Status of Women 70 in New York.

The summit, themed “Advancing Women’s Influence in a Changing World,” took place at the Church Center for the United Nations, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, development partners, and advocates committed to strengthening women’s roles in leadership, governance, peacebuilding, and socio-economic development.

Speaking on the theme “From Intention to Alliance: Architecture of the Global Handshake,” Mrs. Disu emphasized the importance of deliberate alliances and collaborative leadership frameworks that empower women to contribute meaningfully to global decision-making processes.

She noted that in a rapidly evolving global landscape marked by technological advancement, security challenges, and socio-economic transformation, women must not only be participants but architects of inclusive solutions.

Mrs. Disu also highlighted the work of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Nigeria, which continues to champion initiatives aimed at empowering women, strengthening family welfare, and promoting community development, particularly within law enforcement communities.

Mrs. Disu attended the summit alongside members of the POWA Executive, including Mrs. Taibat Adenola and Mrs. Funsho Adegboye.

Also present were members of the Nigeria Police delegation to CSW70, including AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, ACP Olabisi Okuwobi, and ACP Dolapo Badmos, the Nigeria Police Force Permanent Mission’s Representative to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, was represented at the event by Ms. Abe Jawando, while the Minister of Defence was represented by Major Nneka Olimma-Adinweruka, Gender Officer in the Office of the Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD).

The summit also witnessed the participation of Nigerians in the diaspora working across diverse professional fields including security, information technology, and public service, alongside delegates and stakeholders from several countries around the world.

The engagement underscored Nigeria’s continued commitment to advancing gender equality, strengthening women’s leadership, and fostering global partnerships aimed at building inclusive and resilient societies. Through platforms such as the Commission on the Status of Women 70, stakeholders reaffirmed the importance of collaboration across governments, civil society, and international partners in accelerating progress for women and girls worldwide.
