CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
In an open letter titled “A Possible Light In An Impossible Darkness: The Case of Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe,” the author said the minister’s actions since his appointment in May 2026 have brought renewed hope to Nigerians who have experienced challenges in the power sector over the years.
According to the writer, many Nigerians had become frustrated over the state of electricity supply in the last decade, but recent developments have shown that improvement is possible with commitment and proper planning.
He stated that the minister has demonstrated that improved electricity supply does not have to take forever if the right work ethic, competence and service delivery are prioritized.
The author noted that Tegbe has shown that routine responsibilities in public service can be accomplished without waiting for public outcry, and that quality input is necessary to achieve quality output in the power sector.
He wrote: “The holy book says you save the best wines for the last and the Benins say you save your best masquerade for the last dance. Those who know me can attest I have NEVER singled out a government employee for praise but when you demonstrate that bringing electricity to impossible darkness can be achieved by promoting a work ethic, moral rectitude, quality service you make a difference.”
Iyamu further stated that although the minister’s time in office is short, his efforts have shown that Nigeria can work when Nigerians are committed to doing their best and when merit is promoted.
He compared the minister’s approach to that of notable reformers in other countries, referencing Lee Kuan Yew, former Prime Minister of Singapore, who wrote in his book “From Third World to First World” how Singapore built its economy, and Ramón Méndez Galain, the physicist and former Energy Secretary of Uruguay who was appointed in 2008 by President Tabaré Vázquez and was credited with leading Uruguay’s transition to near 100 percent renewable electricity.
The author said Tegbe’s work is showing that nation building is multidimensional and that electricity is critical to achieving Nigeria’s economic goals, including the Federal Government’s one trillion dollar economy target.
He concluded by urging the minister to sustain the momentum and avoid complacency, noting that history will remember contributions made towards improving the power sector.
