A 34-year old pregnant woman, Chinenye Nwankwo, has been delivered of a baby girl in Lagos but sold the baby to another woman, Bini Happiness, for N300,000.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at No. 10 Oki Lane, Sari Iganmu area of Orile, Lagos, where they reside.
Both the mother of the baby and the buyer were said to have negotiated and agreed on the price before the baby was born.
However, the illicit transaction leaked; both the mother of the baby and the buyer were arrested by Police operatives from the Gender Section of the Command in Lagos.
It was gathered that the woman, Chinenye, got pregnant and was delivered of the baby in question after nine months. Just a day after delivery, she allegedly sold the baby to the buyer, Bini, to the tune of N300,000 and Bini then took custody of the new born baby.
When Bini was arrested, she confessed to the Police that she bought the baby from the mother.
Thus, Chinenye was arrested and she also confessed that she had sold the baby to Bini, who was in need of a child.
The Police found them culpable and later charged both of them before the Ogba Magistrates Court for conspiracy and selling of the baby.
They pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Ezekiel Ayorinde, asked the Court to fix a date for hearing since they pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the offence.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties in like sum.
They were remanded in prison custody pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
The matter was adjourned till 22nd January, 2020.
