There are strong indications that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will commission Section one of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano expressway on May 29, 2026, as part of events marking the third anniversary of the administration.

The contractors handling the project who spoke to journalists in Tungamaje where the project commenced on Thursday morning, said the section will be 100 percent completed before the end of the day.

The journalists are on tour of President Tinubu’s projects in the northwest geopolitical zone.

A Presidency official who spoke to a few journalists on condition of anonymity, on the margins of the ongoing tour, said there is a proposal on the table of the President from the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to include the project as part of the ones he will commission on May 29.

The section is a reinforced concrete pavement which experts say will last for up to 100 years. The section is also complete with full solar lighting.

The road is being rebuilt with 200mm thick reinforced concrete, designed to last and handle high traffic volumes.

Offering a superior alternative to traditional asphalt, the road is designed for durability and improved safety, with significant work done to address previous high-traffic, dangerous areas.

The construction on this section is part of a larger plan to fix the entire 375.9 km road that links Abuja to Kano.

So far, 25 kilometres of the 72-kilometre Section II that links Jere to Kaduna has been completed.
