Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, OFR, Founder of United Nigeria Airlines and a leading governorship aspirant for Anambra 2025, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating inferno that engulfed Onitsha Main Market from the late hours of March 28th to March 29th before it was finally contained by firefighters. The fire, which raged for approximately 19 hours, caused widespread destruction, leaving businesses and livelihoods in ruins.

In a statement released by his media office in Awka, Prof. Okonkwo lamented the tragic loss of goods worth billions of naira, the destruction of properties, and the immense hardship inflicted on traders, residents, and the entire Anambra economy.

“My heart goes out to the traders who have lost their investments and properties in this unfortunate incident, as well as to the Obi of Onitsha and the government and people of Anambra State. This is one disaster too many—one that has upended livelihoods and plunged families into distress. I share in your pain and stand in solidarity with all those affected.”

Prof. Okonkwo called on both the Federal and State Governments to provide immediate relief and support to the victims to help them rebuild their businesses and recover from this tragic loss. He also appealed to well-meaning individuals in the state and corporate entities to come to the aid of the victims.

He further emphasized the urgent need for proactive fire prevention measures in markets and other public spaces, stressing that strategic planning, improved emergency response, and enhanced safety protocols must be prioritized to avert future disasters.

“We must take decisive action to prevent such tragedies from recurring. It is imperative that the government strengthens fire safety regulations, ensures market compliance with preventive guidelines, and equips firefighting agencies with the necessary resources to respond swiftly to emergencies.”

Prof. Okonkwo reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of Ndi Anambra and expressed hope that with collective effort, resilience, and proactive governance, the state can safeguard lives, businesses, and investments from avoidable disasters.
