Political reactions have continued to trail the declaration by Hon. Greg Amarube, popularly known as “Dino”, of his “Divine Mandate” to represent Anambra South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

Amarube, an Umuchu-born philanthropist and community leader, unveiled the mandate on Monday during a town hall meeting in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area. He said his decision to run was borne out of divine direction and the overwhelming call from constituents across the seven local government areas of the zone.

“The mandate is not mine. It is divine. It is for the greater good of Anambra South,” Amarube told a crowd of party stakeholders, youth leaders and traditional rulers. “For too long, our people have lacked effective representation. I am answering the call to change that narrative.”

The declaration has since sparked conversations across Anambra South, with supporters describing the move as timely while critics question the timing ahead of the 2027 elections.

Chief Emeka Okoye, a stakeholder from Nnewi, described Amarube’s entry as “a breath of fresh air”.

“We need people with capacity and compassion. Dino has been doing it in private. Now let him do it on a bigger stage. Anambra South needs development, not noise,” he said.

Youth groups in Ekwusigo and Ihiala also welcomed the announcement, citing Amarube’s track record in compassion, education support and youth empowerment in Umuchu and surrounding communities in Anambra South.

“For years he has been paying school fees to the less privileged people and giving grants without cameras. If he brings that same energy to the Senate, we will be fine,” said Chidimma Obi, Coordinator of South Youth Connect.

However, some political observers urged caution. A chieftain of the APC in Orumba North, who pleaded anonymity, said: “Divine mandate is good, but politics is also structure. He must build bridges across all parties in the zone.”

Religious leaders in the area also lent their voices. Rev. Joseph Nwoye, prayed for peaceful campaigns.

“Leadership is service. Whoever God has chosen will emerge. But let it be done with integrity and love for the people,” he said.

As at press time, no major political party has officially adopted a candidate for Anambra South, but sources say Amarube’s early declaration may force other aspirants to declare their intentions soon.

Political analysts note that Anambra South has remained a hotly contested zone due to its economic importance and large voting population. With voter apathy a concern in previous elections, candidates with grassroots appeal like Amarube may have an advantage.
