Human Rights activist and social critic, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, has pleaded with Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Inland waterways Authority, Chief Dr. George Muoghalu, to expedite actions towards resuscitation of the moribund Onitsha Sea Port inaugurated by Alhaji Shehu Shagari administration in 1981.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that Ezekwueme, who is also the Chairman of Civil Liberty Organization, CLO, Anambra State branch, made the appeal in statement.

He said, “It is despicable and detestable that the aim for the establishment of the Sea Port is a mirage and elusive. The good intentions of the government to boost economic activities, create jobs and wealth, improve ease of doing business, give South East sense of belonging, reduce bottles necks in clearing goods and save monies wasted in transporting containers from different ports to the Southeast has been defeated due to non functional status of the port”.

Ezekwueme said that it was prime importance to note that business men in the Southeast lose huge amounts of money due to transport fares and incessant Customs and Police check points, adding that if the goods are cleared at Onitsha Seaport it reduces the cost of the goods and improves commercial activities.
The CLO boss posited, “Significantly, this is opportunity for Dr. Muoghalu to write his name in gold by taking decisive steps towards rehabilitating decrepit Onitsha Seaport as the greatest and best democratic dividend to the people of Southeast”.

It will be recalled that Ezekwueme had during the appointment of Muoghalu described  it as the best Christmas gift for Southeast and better way to resuscitate Onitsha Seaport.

There is no response yet from Dr. Muoghalu over the appeal made by the CLO as efforts to reach him proved abortive.
