Ogbonna
A Nigeria’s pro-democracy activist, Emeka Chibuzo Ogbonna has condemned the arrest and detention of the convener of RevolutionNow Movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore by the Nigerian Government.
Ogbonna also faulted the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abubakar Adamu for labelling the nationwide protest by the RevolutionNow Movement as an attempt to overthrow the government of Muhammadu Buhari, saying that the government cannot stop the Movement from demanding good governance from the government.
To Ogbonna, RevolutionNow Movement’s call for protest against the policies of the government as they affect the generality of Nigerians is still within the provisions of the Nigerian constitution.
“We are law abiding citizens of this great country, but we won’t allow us to be ruled with these anti people policies of this government. It is unfortunate that we can be experiencing all these suffering under a civilian government and you want us to keep our mouths shut,” Ogbonna, leader of Agenda for New Nigeria (ANN) said in an interview in Lagos.
“Mr. Omoyele is our own and we cannot abandon him at this period. We share the views of the RevolutionNow Movement because we are all Nigerians who want a better country we can call our own.
“For the authorities to come out to label the Movement a terrorist group is rather so unfortunate. We are law abiding and we have the interest of this country at heart.
“The Agenda for New Nigeria says no to all the anti people policies of the government. There is hunger in the land. We are calling on the government of Muhammadu Buhari to stop the special privileges for the ruling class. We want a return of political power and national wealth to the working people.
“No matter the antics of the government, this Movement cannot be stopped. It is a big mistake arresting Sowore because Sowore is not the problem of this country; rather the so called leaders are our woes,” he said.
Ogbonna called on the international community to put pressure on the Nigerian government to allow freedom of speech and right to association, adding that the action of the present government is uncalled for.
The international community should put pressure on the government to release Sowore because he has not done something that warranted the arrest and detention,” he said.
