The Rivers Grassroots Movement (RGM) convened a leadership meeting at the residence of its National Leader, High Chief Amb. Sobomabo Jackrich, bringing together State Representatives, Local Government Coordinators, and Women Leaders from the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State.
Amb. Emeni Ibe, President General of the Orashi National Congress (ONC) and Leader of the RGM in Ahoada East Local Government Area, attended the meeting and later commented on the discussions.
According to a statement from Amb. Ibe, the meeting provided an avenue for RGM leaders to “deliberate on current political realities, strengthen internal unity, and build consensus” regarding the interests of the Movement and Rivers State.
Amb. Ibe described the meeting as “a step in the right direction” given recent political developments in Rivers State and nationally.
In his statement, Amb. Ibe said that if members of the Movement had anticipated Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s withdrawal from the governorship race, the “only alternative” for the RGM would have been to ask High Chief Amb. Sobomabo Jackrich to contest for governor “under any political platform”.
He added, “The decision of our Governor to withdraw from contesting the APC gubernatorial primaries is painful, demoralizing, and unexpected. However, as loyal supporters of His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, we are duty-bound to respect his decision and accept the current reality”.
According to Amb. Ibe, leaders at the meeting “unanimously resolved” that the official position of the RGM on unfolding political developments would be made public “at the appropriate time”.
The Movement, which describes itself as a socio-political group with members across party lines, stated its commitment to “the defence of democracy, promotion of good governance, and preservation of peace, justice, and equity in Rivers State”.
Members and supporters were urged to “remain calm, patient, vigilant” and avoid “deceptive political tactics.”
Amb. Ibe noted that the Rivers Grassroots Movement was formerly known as the Simplicity Movement. He stated that the Movement had previously supported the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
He reaffirmed his support for High Chief Sobomabo Jackrich, referring to him as “the vision bearer” and adding, “he leads and we follow”.
