The Rivers State Government has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its intervention and cooperation in reducing the burden of flood-impacted communities in the State.
Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, stated this during the handover and flag-off of NEMA Relief Materials at the NEMA Operations Office in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday 16 September,2026.
Speaking through the Head of Service, Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. Inyingi Brown, Prof. Odu said NEMA had, over the years, continued to provide succour to people and communities affected by disasters, while offering guidance on disaster management across the country.
According to her ” she sent me to appreciate NEMA for the work you are doing and for the help you are given to people that has suffered different types of disasters. Prof. stressed.
Prof. Odu who called for strict monitoring to ensure that the relief materials get to the intended beneficiaries, noted that the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, established by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was also leading the distribution of relief materials to various Local Government Areas affected by flood
The Deputy Governor called for greater collaboration between the State Government and NEMA, while thanking the Director-General of the Agency for remembering Rivers State at this critical time.
In his welcome address, the Coordinator of NEMA, Rivers and Bayelsa State, Dr. Chidi Ogundu, said that following the flooding experienced in the State, the Federal Government, through the Agency’s Director-General, had approved the release of relief materials to some Local Government Areas in the State to cushion the impact of the disaster on the people.
He noted that, in line with its core value of transparency, the Agency decided to inform the State of the arrival of the materials before their distribution to the affected Local Government Areas.
