There was panic and confusion at a popular Mosque in Ajegunle, Lagos, after some dare-devil armed robbers invaded the place with dangerous weapons to attack and rob worshippers during a prayer session.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Zawiyat Mosque, Ajegunle area of Amukoko, Lagos.
The gang stormed the place at about 1am when the Muslim faithfuls were having a vigil.
However, Police operatives repelled the attack, frustrated their plans and then arrested five of the suspects while others escaped.
The suspects were Tosin Abel, 20, Temitope Precious, 18, Tunmise Makinde, 19, Sodiq Sowemimo, 23 and Samuel Ogunrobi, 18.
They reportedly stormed the place to rob the people of their valuables without minding that it was sacred place of worship before the Police foiled the operation.
The Police also recovered weapons such as knives, catapults, cutlasses and substances suspected to be Indian hemp as exhibits and kept in Police custody.
During interrogation, the Police discovered that it was not only the arrested suspects that went for the operation; many were said to have escaped and were now at large.
The suspects were later charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for conspiracy and armed robbery which attracts several years of imprisonment if they are tried and found guilty before the Court.
However, the suspects were remanded in prison custody following a motion by the prosecutor, Mrs. Williams Rachael, that the matter should be referred to the DPP for advice since their action was armed robbery.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Akingbesote, ordered them remanded in prison custody and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice.
The case was adjourned till 14th November, 2019.
