School Sports Is Bedrock Of Our Plans To Revitalise Sports in Lagos, Says Aiyepeku

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) held a Stakeholders Meeting where it was jointly agreed that there must be a fusion of sports and education in Lagos State to pave the way for all round development of the talents of the students.

This was the position of a joint interactive session during a zoom meeting held on Tuesday by the Management of Lagos State Sports Commission, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Commissioner for Education and officials from the Co Curricular Department of the Ministry of Education, officials from the six education districts and the Chairman of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as well as the President of Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF).

Executive Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Sola Aiyepeku commended the involvement of Ministry of Education in school sports development in the state, adding that the initiative to infuse sports and Education in Lagos will go a long way in tapping into the talents of the students and prepare them for an endurable future.

“I must appreciate the enthusiasm and support from both the Ministry of Education and SUBEB. This will give us the great opportunity to work out physical plans to actualise the vision of having good synergy between sports and education in Lagos.

“For us to achieve this, there must be hardwork, discipline and commitment in the management of school sports in the state.

” The Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Ministry of Education must work together to enhance a formidable School Sports development in the State,” Aiyepeku said.

Honourable Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo assured of the cooperation of the Ministry of Education with the Lagos State Sports Commission, adding that Sports is an important aspect of the School Curriculum.

“We will all work together as a Team to achieve the desired goals,” she said.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board(SUBEB), who was represented at the meeting by Hon. Israel appealed strongly the need to advance the course of sports in Lagos State. He said that with the synergy being planned now, the collaboration will definitely improve sports, grooming of talents and enhance the skills and overall competencies of Lagos students.

To the President of Nigeria Schools Sports Federation, Bisi Joseph, there is urgent need to sensitise stakeholders to buy into the development of sports at the grassroots, the need to revive Inter House Sports Competitions in schools and the National School Sports Festival.

Joseph noted that there is no doubt that Lagos State is the residence of sports in Nigeria as the state has, over time, been creating opportunities for athletes to showcase their talents.
