One of the major educational facilitations of Senator Solomon Adeola Yayi representing Ogun West Senatorial District in the form of a well-equipped Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Centre for Anglican Grammar School Ilaro, Yewa South LGA, has become a catalyst that catapulted the school to the global stage.

The ICT centre in the school, established over a year ago, led to the students of the school making significant strides in the field of robotics and technology and provided a platform for them to join the global trend in technology.

The Yayi Robotics NGR team, comprising students from Anglican Grammar School, Ilaro, were selected and participated in a virtual robotics competition in Mexico, organized by Robojam over the weekend.

The Ilaro school, which was the only school selected in Nigeria and Africa, joined over 60 other teams from across the world including host country, Mexico, Colombia, Philippines and others to pitch their works named Yewabiotic on the international scene.

The Trainer of the students, Mr. Lekan Akinode, an alumnus of the school and a senior lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro explained that “The teams participation in the competition is a testament to the impact of the ICT lab facilitated by Senator Adeola Yayi. The lab has not only provided students with access to modern technology but also fostered a culture of innovation and collaboration leading to the competition. The students’ registration fees for the competition were generously sponsored by the Valerio Foundation, a Mexico-based technology non- governmental organization”.

He said the formation of the Yayi Robotics NGR team could not have been possible without the focus of Senator Adeola on attracting the ICT centre for Anglican Grammar School, which has now turned out to a veritable ground for nurturing young minds, stressing that the school’s journey in robotics and technology is a shining example of how the right facility and enablement can lead to remarkable achievements and blossoming of talents that would have been otherwise dormant.

Team A from the school included Ambrose Benedict Zion, Utibe Feranmi Destiny and Dada Whitney Adetolani competing Bumperpot Robotics category while Team B was made up of Alade Daniel Oluwatosin, Okekeye Adebayo Abraham and Anyadioha Maria-Consolata Nzubechukwu competed in Randomap Robotics category.

Commenting on the development, Senator Adeola stated that as a legislator, he believes in the power of ICT in the modern world in the education of our youths and over the years trained thousands in ICT skills of international standard with empowerment of laptops computers.

“As a Senator representing Ogun West, I have facilitated the establishment of at least 4 fully equipped ICT Centres across my senatorial district, trained thousands in certified ICT programmes as well as constructed fifteen 12-Classroom Blocks with libraries and staff rooms as part of my educational legislative agenda for my people. With the right environment and infrastructure our people can compete with the rest of the modern world” he stated.

The results of the competition, which took place on 22nd June, 2024 and award of prizes is being awaited at a later date.
