Senator Ovie Omo-Agege – the senator representing Delta North Senatorial district has been arrested by the Nigerian Police.
The distinguished senator was arrested following orders from the leadership of the National Assembly. The order for his arrest was said to be as a result of the pandemonium created earlier today at the National Assembly following the intrusion of some men who invaded the Senate to cart away the mace – the symbol of authority.
The intruders were believed to be sympathisers of the suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who represents Delta North and who was sighted alongside the suspected hoodlums.
Following the mild drama, the presiding officer, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, declared that “the Senate has been invaded” and plenary was immediately suspended.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was suspended last Thursday for 90 legislative days for his comments on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill which he said was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.
In his reaction, the Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said it was an act of treason and an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force.
“Today, some armed hoodlums led by suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper Legislative Chamber, the mace”
Senator Abdullahi said.
Feelers from the Red Chambers as at the time of filing this report, indicated that Senator Ovie Omo-Agege will be charged to court to serve as deterrent to any member who might want to attempt such in the future. The Senators thereafter went into executive session over the incident.
