The Simplest Definition Of Democracy

FEMI OGUNSHOLA

“The government of the people by the people and for the people”. The people, (I mean YOU with your PVC) determine who get elected into public office.

It’s a form of government where the majority calls the shot. One of the rudiments of democracy is the fundamental human rights as enshrined in the constitution; freedom of choice, right to vote and be voted for, freedom of speech, association among others.

Now that PMB has signified intention to run in 2019, some are extremely angry, they are asking him not to, others say they don’t just want him again, others say he is an old man, but in all, they seem to have jettisoned that democracy allowed them to do the needful via the power of the ballot box by voting the man out and their candidate in

But they do not want to travel this path, all they want is to browbeat him to say he is not seeking reelection. The Yoruba have a saying “if your juju is potent enough you can do yanga on top”, but no, they aren’t sure of their juju (which is the alternative they want in 2019), all they want is for PMB to say OK, I am not contesting.

It will be cheering if you stop exhibiting your frustration and pain over PMB’s choice to seek reelection, all you need is go get your Permanent Voter Card( PVC) and send him to his farm in Daura, don’t be a lazy voter who just want your candidate emerge without a fight.

Asking a very reasonable full fledged adult why he/she is supporting a candidate is a disservice to your brain. Asking supporters of PMB what his achievements were/are shows you have been playing ludo while men went to work.

Yes, the social intervention programme of PMB’s administration may be a non issue to you, you see it as peanut and a way of degrading other Nigerians, but I know a lot of beneficiaries that will tell the miracle it has performed in their lives.

N30,000 is meager no doubt, but when most of the N-power received their stipends yesterday they simply said “Sai Baba”, you can never tell those ones not to vote PMB. N-power is a total departure from the fraudulent SURE-P of the last administration.

This is not to mention roads that are receiving the deserved attention, construction and rehabilitation are ongoing across the country. Civil servants who were hitherto owe months of arrears have been fully paid till date, corruption in public service reduced to barest minimum.

The man who told you not to reinforce failure is himself an embodiment of failure who with much opportunities frittered away the greatest legacy he would have left on the sound of time. But now going from one state to the other to preach performance. Our memories are still intact and very functional.

PMB made mistakes, he foot dragged where he should have been assertive, the fight against corruption hasn’t achieved the needed desired results and other misdemeanors in his first term, but none of the presidents elected since 1999 has matched his gut, determination, sincerity, honestly, integrity, focus and achievements. May be Yar’adua would have done something but death came calling.

So dear Nigerians, canvass and vote your candidate without questioning the rights of others. Shalom!
