Slow Down; Life’s Struggle Is Not A Race

DON EBUBEOGU

Falling behind expectations is one of the greatest fears of every entrepreneur.

Recently, I have constantly worried about falling behind my personal goals. I had this idea of a growth curve in my head, but in comparison to both my aspirations and my imagined potential, I feel like I am falling behind. There seemed to be a gap between where I was and where I should be.

The feeling of falling behind can be relatable in various aspects of life, whether in entrepreneurship, relationships, or societal expectations.

Thoughts like this usually keep me awake at night. I struggle with sleep, not out of illness but self-drive and conjunction of thoughts.

But this is just madness.

We are expecting so much from ourselves and worry more about falling behind.

We have constantly failed to give ourselves credit for our accomplishments, no matter how insignificant.

We compete with our imaginations and create a false race against our peers and competitors.

I often listen to music when I cannot sleep or pick up my phone and read abstracts.

And today, while listening to Cindy Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’, I realised that our worth is not determined by the speed at which we accomplish things. It’s about our progress and the person we become along the way.

Let’s quit the race; it doesn’t matter how slow we go as long as we don’t stop.
