Soludo Rescued Fegge After 56 Years Of Infrastructure Neglect – Igwe Iweka III

It was a moving scene when Soludo and ndi Anambra gathered at Achebe Stadium in Fegge to witness Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, the traditional ruler of Obosi do the ceremonial blessing of the kolanut for the distribution of 1,040,000 economic tree seedlings.

 

During the event, the Iweka III shared an emotional account of growing up in Fegge, Onitsha, and experiencing the city’s severe dearth of infrastructure, including inadequate access roads, dearth of public facilities and lawlessness.

 

It was a powerful reminder of the 56 years of neglect that the forgotten urban centre had endured until Soludo assumed office two years ago. Now, everything that was once wrong with Onitsha South has been transformed. From a once-ruined slum, the city has transformed into a thriving urban center. The former 18-year-old waste site is now a center for water fountain, and the road infrastructure has been greatly improved in terms of quality and accessibility.

 

Before the coming of Soludo, the city of Onitsha experienced devastating consequences as a result of flooding. In the past 20 years, the impact has been particularly severe, with thousands of homes, businesses, and public facilities being displaced. Tragically, even school children and their schools were not left out by these floods, resulting in the loss of homes, loved ones, and livelihoods.

 

However, on Soludo’s assumption, he developed policies that have addressed this issue. Efforts to permanently solve flooding have included the construction of drainages, water storm discharge systems on our roads, and the desilting of canals and existing drainages.

 

Additionally, illegal structures have been demolished, and measures have been taken to address issues related to touting, this radical policy has been positive and resulted in traders across the country now coming back to trade and shop in Onitsha. As a result of these efforts, Onitsha has experienced a glorious transformation, and the city is once again thriving courtesy of “Ike-otu-onye.”
