Southern Youth Foundation Kicks Off Campaign Against Pipeline Vandalism & Oil Theft In Niger Delta

The Southern Youth Foundation (SYF), comprising youth groups from the southern states of Nigeria, has officially launched its much-anticipated “Campaign Against Pipeline Vandalization and Oil Theft”.

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the campaign, which runs from October 21 to October 30, 2024, aims to address the persistent issue of illegal oil refineries, locally known as “Krofire,” and the damaging impact of pipeline vandalization in the Niger Delta region.

 

Led by the National President of SYF, Snr. Comrade Amb. Emeni Ibe, the campaign seeks to create awareness about the long-term economic and environmental consequences of these illicit activities.

The event has garnered the support of community leaders, environmental activists, security agencies, and stakeholders in the oil sector.

 

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Port Harcourt, Amb. Ibe emphasized the urgency of tackling oil theft and illegal refineries, which have not only cost Nigeria billions in revenue but have also degraded the environment, particularly in the Niger Delta.

“The Southern Youth Foundation recognizes that pipeline vandalism and oil theft are not just economic crimes but also crimes against the people, the land, and future generations. We are here to change the narrative and demand accountability,” he stated.

 

The programme includes rallies, town hall meetings, and advocacy engagements across key cities and oil-producing communities in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and other southern states. The campaign will also focus on educating the youth about the dangers of engaging in illegal oil activities and offering alternative livelihood solutions.

 

The Niger Delta region has long suffered from the environmental degradation caused by illegal refineries and oil spills, with communities facing health risks, loss of arable land, and pollution of water sources. The campaign aims to foster collaboration between government agencies, traditional rulers, and youth groups to safeguard the region’s resources.

 

The SYF’s initiative comes at a critical time when the Nigerian government is intensifying efforts to curtail oil theft, which has significantly reduced the country’s oil production. The campaign is expected to enhance security efforts and mobilize local communities to protect vital infrastructure.
