Deji Tinubu
For the first time since the year the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon started, stakeholders of the event gathered together to remember one man who has been described as the vision driver of the internationally acclaimed race championship in Nigeria.
He was Deji Tinubu, the Special Advise on Sports to erstwhile Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode who also doubled as the Executive Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission
The gathering was organised on the eve of the 5th edition of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, 7 February, 2020, iside Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Put together by the organisers of the marathon race, it was christened Ayodeji Tinubu Merit Awards where a good number of individual and corporate organisations were recognised and honoured for their contributions to the successful organisation of the marathon since the first edition five years ago.
“I remembered when we came up with the idea of organising the marathon and we need to push it through the state government for its acceptance, it was the late Deji Tinubu that gladly accepted and saw the vision of the good things we wanted to do. He advised us how we can go about it that would be accepted to the Governor then. Deji Tinubu was not vision killer, he helped us drove the vision for us to have a good foundation of what we are having today,” said Bukola Olopade, the CEO of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the Consultant of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
The Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku, who happened to be a Special Assistant to Deji Tinubu when the idea of organising the city marathon was brought to the Lagos State Government described his former boss as a listening and man of great virtue who always saw good and positive things in whatever was brought before him and would always strive to make things happened.
To Yemisi Agbaje, who talked extensively on Deji Tinubu as manager of men and resources, the man Deji Tinubu was a father to all his staff both at home and office. He disclosed many people the late sports administrator had helped to become somebody in life today, adding that his legacy would forever remain with the people who he had touched positively in life.
